It is well known that the first book that captured Steinbeck's youthful imagination was a juvenile version of the King Arthur stories. Steinbeck often used myths and themes or biblical stories in his novels: Cup of Gold is a retelling of the myth of Henry Morgan the pirate Tortilla Flat and Cannery Row employ the King Arthur fables.
